Gigi Hadid Interview on Living Without Regret

Gigi Hadid has an interesting relationship with time. She procrastinates, but is a morning person; wants to go back in time to see if it really was aliens who built the pyramids, but believes in living in the moment. If Hadid could, she’d travel through time to skip entire situations, but was more than generous with the few minutes she did have to chat with ELLE.com about her latest watch collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger. Dressed in sweats, a racing jacket, and swimsuit-as-bodysuit, here’s what she had to say.

How was working with Tommy on watches different from working on clothes?

Well, with clothes you get to have a lot more ideas whereas the watch you kind of have to like make something that works with everything. This watch, to me, really went with the racing idea of the collection because it kind of reminds me like a shiny new car. It’s very sleek and beautiful and the color really goes with everything.

What’s your favorite detail on the watch?

I love that it tells the day of the week. It helps me a lot because even when you’re on your phone writing an email, you can be like, “What’s the date?” And then you’re like, “It’s right there.”

If you could go back in time and fix anything, what would you fix?

I know this sounds cliche, but whatever happens, happens for a reason. I think that even in sad or hard situations I’ve learned a lot and maybe I would change the way I’ve reacted to things, but I think you still learn and that’s good.

What do wish you had time to do?

I wish I had time to just go on a personal traveling world tour for a year. Go to different places, not for anything work-related, and just be under the radar and learn about different cultures and see different thing. Just be low-key.

Are you a morning or night person?

I am a morning person. I like to be up with the sun and I leave my blinds open when I sleep. I’m not great at staying up late. That’s why I’m good at going out once a month and the rest of the month I sleep.

When did you first learn to tell time?

I’m not sure. Probably pretty early because my dad was really into watches. We also had a lot of clocks and old timepieces in our house. I went to Egypt when I was in 6th grade and I’ve always been a fan of Egyptian history. I was really interested in the way the clock was invented.

Are you the friend who says you’re almost there or minutes away but you’re definitely not?

No. I never say I’m almost there but I have said like, “Oh, I’m in the car,” but I’m in the elevator. Almost in the car.

If you had one super-power would you prefer to control time or travel through time?

Travel through time because then I could skip entire flights and the entire airport situation. I don’t mind flying and I’m not scared of actual flying, I just fly so much that I’m like, “Wow there’s so much time that I’ve spent like sitting in like a metal tube in the sky.” I would just like to spend more time on the ground in my life.

What period in history would want to go back in time and visit?

I mean there are so many things I would’ve loved to experience including the building of the pyramids. I would love to go back and know if it was aliens or what happened there so I could like tell everyone. I love conspiracy theory.

Are you a five minutes early or five minutes late kind of person?

I like to think that I’m a five minutes early person but I can be a five minutes late person. But for work, I usually am early. I try to be on time.

Do you wait to the last minute or do you get things done ahead of time?

I am a procrastinator but I’m really good at it. I might procrastinate about work stuff but I’ll do it by the deadline. It’s just usually right before the deadline that it’s done, but it’s done well.
